Behind the Scenes

The workshop and studio

Rhian is most happy creating large paintings and enjoys making her own stretched canvases for this purpose. She explains that "there is something extra special about being hands-on throughout the whole process, working with the raw materials and eventually putting those few last strokes of colour on the finished artwork".

Her style is best described as Expressionist, as although her work is clearly representative of the subject, the colours she chooses can sometimes be considered exaggerated and 'unreal'. She explains that "they are somewhat more than colours and express feelings, usually passionate ones". Her technique is to use a roller to create the backdrop, and the detail added later, with brushes, fingers or other tools.
